Monika Casey: Stand-Up Comedian
Meet Monika Casey, a stand-up comedian living in Los Angeles, California. Monika studied at The Groundlings and has appeared on stage, on TV, and in movies.
Monika’s friends nudged her toward stand-up, but it was her stint at The Groundlings that cemented it.
“Joining the Groundlings was a dream I had had my whole life,” Monika says, “So, then I thought: I wanted to make my own stuff.”
That’s when she committed to stand-up.
“The hardest part,” Monika confessed, “is finding the flow. What do you start with? How do you segue?”
Also, remembering bits.
“When I get an idea for a bit, it’s usually at the worst time ever. I’m about to fall asleep. I’m driving. Just any way that it wouldn’t be possible to just go, ‘Oh, I’ve got my pen and paper right here.'”
Monika remembers plenty of her jokes, though, and tests them out on friends.
“If I think [the bit is] good, I’ll start running it by girlfriends and friends and I’ll just call and say, ‘Hey, does this sound funny to you? Oh, and let me just tell you this one, too.'”
“30 minutes later, they’re like, ‘Okay, Monika, we have to go. Bye. Thanks.'”
She’s also learned that authenticity helps make for a better routine. “The audience wants to know about you and what makes you tick because we’re all so different. If people relate to your truths, then [you’re] funny.”
Monika’s also shares advice for getting started in stand-up comedy: “If you’re just starting out, be a nice person. Be reliable. People will book and continue to hire people that are reliable and do good work.
