Lesley Wolff: Casting Director
This is the story of Lesley Wolff, a Casting Director in Los Angeles, California; and, how she made her way in Hollywood.
A Casting Director’s role is to organize the casting of actors in a film, matching talent to available roles.
“It takes a special eye to be able to match the right actor with the right project,” Lesley says. “I’ve always loved matching people up — even for romance.”
It helps to be social.
As a Casting Director, it’s Lesley’s job to know as many people as possible. She keep close contact with directors and producers, but works especially hard to aspiring comedy actors.
“I had a mentor named Sam Brown who said, ‘Come be my producer of my comedy shows. You can emcee every show and do a set at the end.'”
So, that’s what she did. And, then she fell in love with comedy. Lesley began producing her own comedy shows, including the She-She Comedy Show which featured comedians including Chelsea Handler, Tig Notaro, Natasha Leggero, and Melinda Hill.
“I had so much fun promoting the women and seeing the women succeed,” Lesley says, “because back in that time, women didn’t have a lot of space on the comedy floor.”
The show also gave Lesley access. “I knew all the up-and-comers [in comedy]. So, when people were looking for comedians, they’d come to me to cast it.”
And, that’s where Lesley finds her joy.
“One thing that sets me apart from most Casting Directors,” Lesley shared, “is: if you come in, and you’re completely off, I will tell you exactly what you need to change to succeed. And, a lot of people are like, ‘Wow, that note you gave me really changed the way I go into auditions.'”
“Seeing other people success is really the biggest gift for myself.”
