Shannon Ullman is a 20-something who put off a career to travel the world, and work as a blogger and digital marketer. Now, she’s back home and using her skills to find a great career, to pay back college debt, and to buy a house. You can follow Shannon’s journey through her blog, Lives Abroad.
Shannon’s Growella Games Challenge
This is Shannon’s challenge:
Research and select a long-term, investment into which you will put $500 over a 10-week period without reducing the money you put toward existing debts, including student loans.
When Shannon successfully completes her challenge, Growella will send her $500 to add to her selected long-term investment.
It will be up to Shannon to find an appropriate investment vehicle, and to set up her investment account. Shannon will share the research she performed, and the choices she made.
We chose this challenge for Shannon because:
- She has a strong desire to make long-term investments for her future
- She’s been putting money into retirement accounts, but not into personal investment accounts
- She’s been focused on paying down debt, with less attention to building her wealth
Growth in an investment account can compound over time. The sooner one starts, the larger one’s long-term investment gains. Shannon’s Growella Games experience will be the start of a strong, long-term portfolio.
Good luck, Shannon!

The Wisdom Of Shannon Ullman
At the start of Shannon’s Growella Games, we sent a questionnaire that surveyed her attitudes about money and feeling about saving. The questions were mixed among multiple choice, short-answer, and long-form.
Here are some of the things Shannon had to say:
On what it means to be good with money
“Being good with money is spending less than you make, and realizing that investing money is more important than just letting it sit around or spending it on things.”
On the idea that money doesn’t buy happiness
“Money buys freedom!”
On what it means to “make it”
“To ‘make it’ means to be completely self-sufficient when it comes to finances. This means not being an employee. I want my own business, and to be in charge of my own financial assets and future.”
On the most foolish thing she’s done with money
“I’ve been earning money since I was 12, but didn’t start a savings account that I never touched until this year.”
